Identity Acknowledgement

Identity Acknowledgement (In the style of George Ella Lyon’s “I am From”) I am from sandy beaches and bright sun. From NYC beef patties and North Carolina bar-b-que. I am from music played on vinyl records and loud laughter, from playing in the sprinklers in the yard, from middle child syndrome, and multiple pets. I am from tulips and roses. From tomatoes and squash grown in the backyard, from fish caught on a Saturday. I am from Wilson and Price. From movie theatres on holidays and church every day. I am from Lauren Ann’s bright smile and William Dwight’s work ethic. From the sister of artists and musicians and the aunt of amazement. I am from “I’ve been Black for years” and “Where are my glasses?!” From “God is good. All the time.” I am from “ All I gotta do is stay Black and die” and “I am every woman”. From intersectionality and understanding Malcolm X saying “the most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.” I am from Southern California roots with a Bay Area heart. From leaving my home to learn and work, but always hoping to come back. I am from breakfast for dinner and “El Pollo Loco” special nights. From going to Queens to see family and perform musical acts for aunts and uncles with cousins. I am from the opportunity to learn about the humanities while also fostering a love for mathematics. From being the “first in my family” and from falling in love with changing the narrative. I am from cornfields that helped me say “I got a Ph.D., a pretty huge degree.” From “it's not Miss or Misses, it's Doctor or Professor.” I am from the strength of friends that support and gas me up, and from silencing the whispers, no matter how loud they are. From singing in my office, in the kitchen, and in any place I am in. I am from radical love, radical joy, and radical grace.
